Mahmutpasa Hamam
To start the project we went to Mahmutpasa Hamam again and had a second, very informative visit. Quite a few things have changed over the years, e.g. the sinks have been replaced, the entrance room and the second room are occupied by small shops.
For our presentation we analyzed the building and listed all specials of the building.
The domes, the heights, the huge dimension of this space, the linear order and the special acoustic are just some to mention. The so called elephant eyes, small holes in the ceiling, bring spots of sunlight into the Hamam.
A strong element of architecture is the centre point (former hot stone) in the middle of the Hamam.
The buildings got several strengths: the approach trough the colourful bazaar, the contrast between the crowded live outside and the silence inside…
There are also some weaknesses: the former Hamam is still very humid, which is a problem for the building´s substance and also creates an unpleasant smell.
Finally, we, asa group, collected first purposes for the space.
Because of the humid smells, the special light situation and the acoustic we can see a design related to the five senses: a sensual playground.

But still: the Hamam can be used as a traditional space, as a silent one to relax or as a meeting point for tourists and people of all kinds.
These ideas were only a beginning and a starting point for further discussions.
