#GROUP 2
In the beginning of the Project we considered not only the building itself but also the close neibourhood. Our first ideas were based from the old usage of the bedesten. In 15th century it was used as a main international trading center for valuable goods. The cities with bedestens were important trading centers. Especially the inside of the bedesten was used for trading and storaging the most valuable goods. It was surrounded with small one-storey shops. First we thougt about a solution that the complex works together with the traditional trading area around it. The Project should respect the existing structure and characteristic of this traditional district. So, we thought about three main ideas:
1. Social Aspect: a complex that benefits the locals trade and social services.
2. Sea Aspect: regarding to the location of the bedesten near the Golden Horn, we can develope a new bedesten related to sea and fish: restaurants, shops, caffees and even places for fishing.
3. Cultural Aspect: a design area links the developing area of art museums, universities, galleries etc. The complex includes workshops for young designers, total and flexible spaces for exhibitions, conferences and various related activities.
#GROUP 5
Hamam
When one is aproaching a hamam one can hardly notice it. Often it is a small entrance door with a corridor. It is like a tunnel through one can pass into another world. It is something like a calm oasis in the busy bazaar and a place where one can take time for the body and mind.
#GROUP 6
Mahmutpasa Hamam
To start the project we went to Mahmutpasa Hamam again and had a second, very informative visit. Quite a few things have changed over the years, e.g. the sinks have been replaced, the entrance room and the second room are occupied by small shops.
For our presentation we analyzed the building and listed all specials of the building.
The domes, the heights, the huge dimension of this space, the linear order and the special acoustic are just some to mention. The so called elephant eyes, small holes in the ceiling, bring spots of sunlight into the Hamam.
A strong element of architecture is the centre point (former hot stone) in the middle of the Hamam.
The buildings got several strengths: the approach trough the colourful bazaar, the contrast between the crowded live outside and the silence inside…
There are also some weaknesses: the former Hamam is still very humid, which is a problem for the building´s substance and also creates an unpleasant smell.
Finally, we, asa group, collected first purposes for the space.
Because of the humid smells, the special light situation and the acoustic we can see a design related to the five senses: a sensual playground.
Referring to
But still: the Hamam can be used as a traditional space, as a silent one to relax or as a meeting point for tourists and people of all kinds.
These ideas were only a beginning and a starting point for further discussions.
Visits: Mahmutpasa Hamam & Cagaloglu Hamam

1ST WEEKEND
VENERDI 21 ARRIVO A ISTANBUL
-1
